What Causes Stress in Kids?

Stress is not a new phenomenon. It has been around for as long as humans have existed, but what causes stress in children?

According to the American Psychological Association, there are two types of stress: good and bad. Good stress is known as "eustress" and it comes from enjoyable challenges such as sports, hobbies, or projects.

There are many different factors that can cause a child to be stressed out, including family life, school life, social life, friend life, and more!

Bad stress is called "distress", and it comes from difficult situations like illness, bullying, or family problems.

Children feel both types of stress, but they can't always tell the difference between them.

Signs of Stress in Children

Children are more susceptible to stress than adults. They react to it differently, and the effects of stress can last a lot longer. Stress can have a negative impact on their social, emotional, and cognitive development.

Some symptoms include difficulty sleeping or eating; changes in moods; irritability or anger; physical complaints such as headaches or stomachaches; and withdrawal from activities they usually enjoy.

How Parents Can Help Kids with Stressful Situations

Parents are the first and foremost source of support for their children, and they should know how to help them deal with stressful situations. 

It is important for parents to listen carefully and validate their feelings by letting them know that sometimes it can be hard when stress happens. In order to reduce stress in children, it is important to first find the source of their anxiety. 

As a parent, you need to be aware that your child’s stress can come from many sources. 

This can be done by observing the child and seeing how they react in different situations. 

It could be from school work, family issues, or other factors.

Once an anxiety-causing situation is identified, a parent can help their child cope with the situation.

There are some simple things that parents can do to help their children cope with stress:

Be there for your child and make sure they know they can talk to you about anything.

Find out what is stressing them out. Try talking about it with your child and see if you can discover what is causing their anxiety or stress.

Help your child explore different ways to deal with their stress: Offer to go out and do something fun, watch a movie, or take them on a hike.

Be supportive of your child’s efforts: Let them know that you are proud of what they are doing and committed to helping them get through this difficult time.
